Crypto Lombard Loan: Liquidity Against Your Portfolio

The Lombard loan is how private banks have long lent against investment portfolios. Clapp applies the same idea to crypto: pledge a basket of digital assets, receive euros or stablecoins from €50,000 equivalent, and keep the portfolio for the long run.

What Is a Lombard Loan?

A pledge-backed credit line, named after Lombardy's bankers
A Lombard loan is credit secured by a pledged portfolio of liquid assets. It takes its name from the merchant bankers of Lombardy in northern Italy, who lent against pledged goods across medieval Europe. Today private banks offer Lombard credit against portfolios of shares and bonds: the client pledges the portfolio, the bank applies a loan-to-value ratio to it, and the client draws cash without selling. A crypto Lombard loan follows the same logic with digital assets. You pledge BTC, ETH, stablecoins or a mixed basket, the credit desk sets an LTV for the whole portfolio, and you draw euros or stablecoins up to that limit. Repay, and the collateral comes back to your wallet.

Why a Crypto Lombard Loan

  • Portfolio Stays Invested

You keep your long-term positions and borrow against them instead of selling, so the portfolio is intact when the line is repaid.

  • Built for Larger Amounts

Lines start from €50,000 equivalent and are structured individually, which suits institutional and private holders with sizeable portfolios.

  • LTV for the Whole Basket

Instead of a fixed cap per coin, the credit desk agrees one LTV for your portfolio mix. Diversified top 50 portfolios are reviewed case by case.

  • Rate Shaped by Risk

A conservative LTV and liquid collateral such as BTC or stablecoins let the desk offer a lower rate.

  • Flexible Repayment

Repay part or all of the line when it suits you, without an early repayment penalty, and pay interest only on what you draw.

  • Secured Custody

Pledged assets are kept with institutional custody secured by Fireblocks and its MPC infrastructure.

Crypto Lombard Loan FAQ

  • What is a crypto Lombard loan?

It is a credit line secured by a pledged portfolio of digital assets, built on the same principle as a private-bank Lombard loan. You pledge BTC, ETH, stablecoins or a mix, and draw euros or stablecoins up to a limit set by the portfolio's value and the agreed LTV.

  • Why is it called a Lombard loan?

The name goes back to the merchant bankers of Lombardy in northern Italy, who lent money against pledged goods in medieval Europe. Lending against a pledge has been called Lombard lending ever since.

  • What is the difference between a Lombard loan and a margin loan?

A margin loan is credit from a broker, usually used to buy more assets in the same account, with margin requirements on each position. A Lombard loan gives you liquidity against a pledged portfolio for your own needs. A crypto Lombard loan on Clapp works the second way: you draw euros or stablecoins for your business or investments.

  • What determines the interest rate on a crypto Lombard loan?

Each corporate line is priced on its own risk rather than on a fixed tier. Two things matter most: how conservative the LTV is and how liquid the pledged assets are, with BTC and stablecoins at the liquid end. The agreed rate is written into your term sheet.

  • What are the requirements for a crypto Lombard loan?

A portfolio of supported assets to pledge, an amount from €50,000 equivalent, and verification of the company or individual (KYC/KYB). To start, the credit desk only needs a name, contact details, the assets and the amount.

  • Why does a crypto loan need collateral?

Collateral is what makes the line possible: the limit, the rate and the LTV are all built around the assets you pledge. The more liquid the collateral and the more conservative the LTV, the better the terms the credit desk can offer.
